If Detoxing at Home Worked, You Wouldn’t Be Reading This
We recommend an inpatient drug and alcohol detox to help people through the initial stages of addiction withdrawal. Depending on how long you’ve been using and how much of each substance you’ve been using, withdrawal symptoms vary.
Symptoms of withdrawal may include combinations of the following:
- Seizures
- Disorientation
- Dehydration
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Nausea
- Sensitivity to heat and cold
- Severe body aches
- Insomnia
- Anger
- Apathy
- Anhedonia
In order to keep patients as comfortable and stable as possible, we have the ability to provide FDA-approved withdrawal medications if we need to. Our clinicians will decide which drugs to administer (if any) based on your risk for potentially serious complications, health and medication history, allergies, and existing medical conditions.
What Happens After Drug Detox?
While certain prescribed medications can protect patients from health-related detox complications, this is only the first step in addiction treatment. Drug and alcohol detox is an essential first step in the recovery process; however, detox alone is not enough to help a person stay sober on a long-term basis.
At Avedis, our goal is to set patients up for lasting recovery. After completing detox, you will remain in our residential treatment home for medical monitoring and an introduction to our therapeutic programs. We call this program partial hospitalization because your vital signs will be monitored while you attend treatment.
What Happens in Partial Hospitalization?
Your therapists will work with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that works for both you and your family. We understand that everyone’s recovery process is different; however, we know that people are more likely to succeed when they have completed a residential detox program and have access to post-treatment recovery services. Whether you need advice or just want to talk to a person who understands some of what you’re going through, Avedis’s staff is here to help.
During partial hospitalization and residential addiction treatment, these are a few of the concepts you will explore during group and individual therapy sessions:
- Cue-induced cravings
- Impaired decision-making skills
- Accountability vs. guilt
- Controlling controlables
- Finding purpose and meaning
- Setting and meeting goals
- Dealing with boredom
- Gratitude and acceptance
While certain prescribed medications can protect patients from health-related detox complications, this is only the first step in addiction treatment. If drug and alcohol detox alone were enough to help people get sober permanently, we wouldn’t offer anything else. What makes a residential detox program so effective is its ability to help a person transition seamlessly into treatment. At Avedis, our detox and residential programs take place under the same roof, so you won’t need to worry about commuting or relocating. In addition, the acquaintances you develop during detox often end up becoming lasting friendships.
What Happens in Residential Treatment?
During residential treatment, you will participate in recovery-centered and individual therapy, 12-step meetings, and process groups. We find that a combination of cognitive-behavior therapy coupled with individual counseling sessions helps people develop the tools they need to find meaning and purpose in life.
